Anita Ward sang the song “Ring My Bell.”

Released in 1979, “Ring My Bell” is a disco single written and produced by Frederick Knight. Ward’s recording became a major international hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, the US soul chart and the UK singles chart. Its instantly recognizable electronic drum sound, created with the Synare instrument, helped give the track its distinctive dance-floor pulse.

The song’s origin is often misunderstood. Knight originally wrote it for young singer Stacy Lattisaw as a light song about teenagers talking on the telephone. After Lattisaw signed with another label, Ward was asked to record it instead. Her version transformed the composition into a disco anthem and became her only major mainstream hit.

The lyrics have frequently been interpreted as a double entendre, although Knight said he intended a clean-cut image for Ward. The track’s success earned Ward a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1980. Other artists later recorded versions, including Australian singer Collette, but Ward’s 1979 recording remains the canonical answer.
